A difficulty is identified and each party is willing to undergo mediation. The organisation then contacts the mediator.
- The mediator will contact each party concerned individually and confidentially to conduct a preliminary interview and assesses the complexity of the case. The purpose of mediation is explained and the wishes of each party to resolve the issues are explored.
- When all parties are ready, a mediation meeting is arranged. Ground rules and an agenda are agreed before the meeting.
- The meeting takes place and the issues are explored one by one. The mediator works with the parties to listen to the issues from each individual's perspective, to clarify the underlying issues and encourage mutual understanding and honest communication.
- The mediator will facilitate the identification of solutions that are mutually acceptable and agreed by all parties.
- The mediator will prepare a written agreement for parties to sign.
- A follow up meeting with the moderator is agreed to see how the agreements are working out.
